Subtle and Zach Hill

Saw Subtle tonight (they of the scariest show ever back in May). It was at a different, less creepy venue, which made me feel a little less like I might have my soul stolen. The performance was good though.

I knew nothing about the band the first time I saw them. But I've been listening to them since that show, so I recognized a few of the songs tonight. I definitely recommend seeing them if you are at all interested in something unique. They aren't quite like anything else I've ever seen.

Speaking of weird: the opening act was one Zach Hill, a drummer, performing a piece of endurance drumming entitled "Necromancer." The setup, as provided by spooky backing narration, was basically this: Necromancer has three daughters. One dies. The other two want him to resurrect the third. He cautions that it is possible, but only if the daughters play their hearts out.

And so, Hill, representing one of the daughters, spent 37 minutes trying to destroy a drum kit. It was basically awesome.

Sadly, my camera phone couldn't capture more than three frames per second with saturated audio. Hell, my eyes could only see a blur of flailing appendages. I found a video of the first ten minutes of one of his Necromancer sets. It doesn't do it justice, but you get the idea.
